Whether it’s Lady Gaga or Iris Apfel, some of our favorite icons have rocked Alexis Bittar. Now, in a unique collaboration, the provocative designer is featuring a special selection of limited-edition editorial pieces from his collections over the years. From a crystal mask designed for Gaga to a Deco-inspired bib necklace, these creations represent Bittar’s unpredictable take on jewelry, and his unique fusion of art, fashion and downtown club kid sensibilities. The Thread chatted with Bittar about his influences, artistic references and covetable pieces.

“These pieces are true editorial and way more influenced by the runway. They’re really art,” he explains.

The gold shirt collar necklace (worn by Lauren Hutton in a former ad campaign) represents his movement toward high-shine metal that started several years ago.

“This necklace was based on one I designed with Grace Coddington for American Vogue a few years ago,” he explains. I was going after the idea of a men’s shirt collar—kind of futuristic, but also really ’80s.”

With cultural references ranging from Art Nouveau to ’80s street art, Bittar’s bold aesthetic has long been defined by artistic influences.

“I love sculpting, that’s really my background, and also referencing art. I have a real appreciation of it, and that’s what I like doing in terms of pushing the envelope,” he says.

A trio of cuff bracelets were inspired by graffiti-influenced artist Keith Haring and infused with the structural elegance of Art Deco.

“I love the idea of art to wear, particularly now more than ever,” he explains, citing famed fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli as an inspiration.

His fall Lucite collection features nature-inspired details and a new painting process that captures the colors of a scarab beetle wing with stunning greens and blues.

“There’s a very Art Nouveau feel to the collection, and there’s this iridescence we’ve never been able to get before with almost a two-tone, metallic, space-age quality to it,” he says.

Bittar also tried to capture the over-the-top glamour of the late ’70s, Halston and Studio 54.

In juxtaposition, his latest Elements collection is all about raw, animal edge.

“I love the idea of having something that’s animal and slightly predatory and a little bit dangerous—something that you’d be afraid to touch or play with. There’s something almost punkish about it.”

Whether looking to the past or future for inspiration, Bittar continues to remain focused on the art of provocation.
